For decades, the United States was a global leader in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights. In the 1960s and 1970s, bipartisan leaders recognized that family planning, for example, was not just health care—it was a driver of stability, prosperity, and human rights.

That leadership mattered.

Between 1990 and 2020, global maternal mortality was cut nearly in half, thanks to sustained investment in family planning, health systems, and women’s education. The U.S. sent a powerful message: reproductive freedom is not optional, but essential.

Yet the same influence has also caused harm. U.S. anti-rights groups have spread disinformation across Africa and Asia, undermined FDA credibility on abortion pills, mischaracterized contraceptives, and blocked young people from learning about their bodies.

Her body, her dignity, her future—these are not political bargaining chips. Women and girls deserve autonomy and opportunity.

• When a girl has access to menstrual supplies, she can stay in school.
• When a woman has contraception, she can decide if and when to become pregnant.
• When a young person learns about their rights, they can resist harmful practices.

Every dollar invested in reproductive health generates four dollars in health and economic benefits. The returns are lives saved, opportunities created, and communities strengthened.
